The interview process

  1. 1

    Online application

    Reported

Citadel (the hedge fund) and Citadel Securities run separate applications, one at citadel.com/careers and one at citadelsecurities.com/careers. For quant research and engineering roles recruiting is joint, so candidates interview with both firms. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and the most competitive offices fill up first, so apply early.

  2. 2

    Online assessment

    Reported

An online assessment is the first screen for quant intern and graduate roles. Reported to be broadly the same for interns and full-time hires, with roughly 70% of applicants not passing. Cycle timing reported as September to October.

  3. 3

    First round (quantitative research)

    Official

A 45- to 60-minute remote video interview covering technical and behavioural skills: programming, research ability, data structures and algorithms, and problem-solving (core languages Python and C++, any language welcome; a CoderPad link is sent beforehand). You are also asked about your technical interests, past internships, projects and why Citadel. Candidates report first rounds run October to December.

  4. 4

    Second round (onsite, quantitative research)

    Official

Usually three to five 60-minute interviews assessing a mix of technical and behavioural skills; Citadel says it contacts you with next steps within two weeks of this round. Engineering candidates have a shorter format of about three 45-minute interviews plus a leadership interview with a senior engineer.

  5. 5

    Super Day

    Reported

Reported final round of 4 to 6 interviews held at a Citadel office (London, Chicago, New York, Hong Kong) or virtually, each covering a different domain: probability, coding, market intuition and behavioural. Reported offer window January to February.

  6. 6

    Stock pitch (Citadel Associate Program)

    Reported

The equities Associate Program internship description lists instructor-led classroom training, rotations on investment teams and a team-based stock pitch, so pitching is part of the programme itself. The official page names pitching and investment discussions as part of the role.

  7. 7

    Final review and offer

    Official

After the second round, hiring managers across teams at Citadel (and Citadel Securities for joint roles) decide where you fit best; if several teams are interested you work with your recruiting contact to choose. If you receive offers from two businesses at Citadel you choose which one to accept.

Official means the information comes from Citadel's own website or job board. Reported means a reputable third party published it. Whitmore is independent and not affiliated with Citadel. Always confirm details on the firm's own site before applying.
