The interview process

  1. 1

    Online application (one application only)

    Official

Apply via HRT's careers site (Greenhouse). HRT asks candidates to apply to only ONE posting and to indicate interest in other offices/roles in the application questions; it then considers you for all open positions. Algorithm Developer candidates choose C++ or Python for interviews. HRT says to allow up to 2 weeks for application review; next steps come by email. Same process across New York, London and Singapore.

  2. 2

    Coding test (online assessment)

    Official

HRT's student FAQ says technical interviews usually start with a coding test. HRT's own interview guide (2021, written for Software and Algo Engineering roles) describes it as a timed take-home test on HackerRank or Codility, with possible language restrictions by role.

  3. 3

    Coding test content (reported)

    Reported

eFinancialCareers (June 2023) reported intern coding-test questions such as an array-of-queries problem, a binary-sum problem and a cipher-implementation problem, with strict execution-time limits. Role (SWE vs Algo Dev) not specified.

  4. 4

    Technical phone screens

    Official

1-2 technical phone/video screens. Length and topics vary by role. HRT's engineering interview guide describes rounds of about 45 minutes (problem solving/data structures/systems, plus a programming round in C++ or Python). HRT's student FAQ says Algorithm Developers draw on maths, statistics and data analysis as well as C++/Python, but HRT does not publish the exact topics of Algo Dev screens.

  5. 5

    Final onsite (multi-round)

    Official

A multi-round final interview (student FAQ). HRT's interview guide describes a full day of back-to-back interviews, which can be virtual or onsite. Interviewers also assess collaboration, how you take hints and how you communicate (thinking out loud).

  6. 6

    Fit / motivation questions (reported)

    Reported

eFinancialCareers (March 2026) reports that HRT has a highly academic culture, cares about your choice of modules, and has asked 'What is the coolest topic you learned in class?'

Official means the information comes from Hudson River Trading's own website or job board. Reported means a reputable third party published it. Whitmore is independent and not affiliated with Hudson River Trading. Always confirm details on the firm's own site before applying.
