The interview process

  1. 1

    Online application

    Official

Apply on janestreet.com with a CV/resume; no cover letter required (optional free-text box). No GPA or degree requirement and no finance background needed. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline, so apply early. One application is considered for all open roles and offices globally. Early programmes (FTTP, INSIGHT, FOCUS, SEE, Bridge) use separate per-session application forms with fixed deadlines.

  2. 2

    Application review and recruiter contact

    Official

Every application is reviewed by a person and gets a response, ideally within about a week; a recruiter usually gets in touch within a few days and may suggest a different role that fits your background better.

  3. 3

    Phone / video interviews

    Official

Quantitative Trading: the process starts with phone interviews run by quantitative traders. The interviews feel more like a conversation than a quiz. They focus on how you work through a problem with the interviewer, not on finance knowledge or advanced maths. Quantitative Research: a mix of the trading and software-engineering interviews; the SWE-style round is a technical coding interview over Zoom in any language you choose. Interviews take place on weekdays during local office hours (New York, London, Hong Kong). Jane Street publishes a Probability & Markets guide and a trading mock-interview video to help you prepare.

  4. 4

    Final round (in person)

    Official

In-person interviews at a Jane Street office, with travel and hotel booked and paid for by the firm. Questions can cover problem solving, probability and statistics, coding (any language), data analysis and general interests. All interviews are run by quantitative traders. Key advice: work methodically, communicate clearly, fix your own mistakes and ask why. QR candidates also get coding problems in the SWE style.

  5. 5

    Decision

    Official

You should hear back within about a week of your interviews, whether or not you move forward. If you hold competing offers or exploding deadlines, tell the recruiter: they can often speed up the process. Students who are rejected can usually reapply after about a year.
