Excel modeling tests: conventions and build order
The formatting conventions graders expect, the order to build an LBO or three-statement test in, the formulas that come up every time, and the shortcuts worth learning.
指南以英文編寫,與面試語言一致。
Conventions graders look for
- Blue font for typed inputs, black for formulas, green for links to other sheets.
- No numbers typed inside formulas: every assumption lives in its own input cell.
- One formula per row, written once and filled right.
- Clear signs: decide whether costs are negative and stick to it.
- Check rows: sources equal uses, the balance sheet balances, debt never goes below zero.
Anchoring: the most common mistake
When you fill a formula right, references move with it. A dollar sign stops that: $B$2 always points at B2. Use it for any single input, like a growth rate, that every year should use.
例題 · Grow revenue at a fixed rate
經程式驗證Revenue is 100 in C3 and the growth rate is 10% in B2. Write one formula in D3 that can be filled right.
查看解題過程
- 1.=C3*(1+$B$2): C3 moves to D3, E3… as you fill; $B$2 stays put.
- 2.Filled to F3, it gives 110, 121 and 133.1.
- 3.Without the anchors, E3 would point at C2, an empty cell, and growth would silently stop.
答案=C3*(1+$B$2), giving 110, 121 and 133.1.
Build order for a timed LBO test
- 1
Read everything first
Note what must be answered, then set up the timeline and the input block.
- 2
Operating model
Revenue to EBITDA to free cash flow, year by year.
- 3
Sources and uses
Price, fees and refinanced debt; debt by tranche; the equity plug. Check sources equal uses.
- 4
Debt schedule
Opening balance, repayments, closing balance, interest. Use opening balances unless told otherwise, to avoid a circular reference.
- 5
Cash sweep
Cash available after mandatory repayments, applied by seniority with MIN so no tranche goes below zero.
- 6
Returns
Exit value, net debt, equity, MOIC and IRR.
- 7
Checks and answers
Check rows, then the written questions. Leave five minutes for these.
例題 · The sweep formula
經程式驗證50 of cash is available and the loan balance is 80. How much is repaid, and what's left?
查看解題過程
- 1.Repayment = MIN(cash available, balance) = MIN(50, 80) = 50.
- 2.Closing balance = 80 − 50 = 30. With 100 of cash, MIN would stop the repayment at 80.
答案50 repaid, 30 left.
Tax with a floor: =MAX(0, pre-tax income) × tax rate
So a loss year pays no tax instead of negative tax.

From Microsoft's keyboard shortcut list for Excel, checked 12 October 2026. On a Mac, F-keys may need the fn key.
Common mistakes
常見錯誤
- Missing $ anchors, so a filled formula drifts off its inputs.
- Typing a number into a formula ("=C5*1.1"): it breaks as soon as an input changes.
- Repaying more debt than is outstanding, or than the cash available.
- Negative tax in a loss year.
- Running out of time before the returns: build a rough version end to end first, then refine.
